なんとなく【何となく】

●なんとなくうれしい. I feel happy for some reason.

・その写真を見るとなんとなく懐かしい感じがした. Seeing that photograph made me feel nostalgic in some strange way.

・真夜中に電話が鳴るとなんとなく気味が悪いものだ. I feel unaccountably frightened when the phone rings at midnight.

・なんとなく泣きたいような気持ちだ. Somehow I feel like crying.

・秋の夕暮れはなんとなくもの寂しい. One feels unaccountably lonely on autumn evenings.

・私はなんとなく海にあこがれを持っていた. I had an unaccountable [a vague] longing for the sea.

・彼女はなんとなく私に気兼ねしているようだ. She seems to display a certain reserve toward me.

・いらっしゃい. なんとなく君が来るような気がしてたんだ. Good to see you. I somehow had a feeling that you'd show up.
